Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Officers report they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered many other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials say initial examinations indicate the liquid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are presently not informed of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for details.
A high-ranking political figure said the vandalism left him stunned and required to be solved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right attack in 2020," he posted on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a assailant focusing on people of migrant background in five years prior.
