Guitar Hero Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That United the Gap Between Rock Generations

It has been 20 years after the legendary game first launched across the Atlantic, providing players everywhere the tools to become a rock star. Not in reality, but try telling that someone who has mastered the epic four-minute guitar solo before a packed crowd of friends.

Developed by the developers, the game gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to follow coloured notes scrolling down the screen synchronized to the music. Each riff mimicked particular chords, creating the sensation of a genuine performance.

Harmonix previously experimented with rhythm games prior to teaming up with RedOctane, which was acquired by Activision during the mid-2000s. Together, they established the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar series that had a remarkable influence on numerous musicians featured, showcasing decades-old bands to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, remembers the initial budgetary hurdles of licensing the songs – despite the fact the first two games mostly used cover versions.

“We rerecorded all the music since the cost prohibitive,” he says. “Despite having the publishing rights by themselves, it proved nearly impossible. We couldn’t get bands like the Who – the publisher had virtually no money, and our team was pretty convinced the project would flop. But once the game became a hit, album purchases and radio play increased, everyone wanted to be in.”

He adds: “One of the amazing things was the number of mothers and fathers got in touch expressing gratitude for exposing their children to the music they loved. It became an intergenerational thing.”

Classic Rock Finds Younger Fans

Northern Irish blues-rock band the Answer included their track in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Guitarist the artist recalls how the series brought older hits back into vogue: “Guitar Hero offered a larger, younger audience. Typically this had been seen as outdated material, but then when it was included in the title young people were finding it, suddenly it became trendy. This validated the genre, eliminating the outdated tag. It provided our catalog a new life.”

At that time, the band's first record remained not available in the US, meaning Guitar Hero was a key medium for exposure for the band during their US tour opening for AC/DC. “The roadies were playing Never Too Late during travel, and some of them knew us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Titles and Lasting Impact

Rock’s biggest acts quickly capitalised on the game's success, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in specialized game editions centered around their music collections and associated lore, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, it was said earned the band more money compared to their studio albums. It moved more than 500,000 copies in its first week, and demand for their songs rose significantly at a time as the industry was already collapsing.

The series still motivates nimble-fingered fanaticism within the community. Recently, a streamer completed an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s the challenging track – a notoriously difficult power-metal song made popular by the game – on Clone Hero, a freeware game with almost identical mechanics and extensive personalization features. The song is difficult enough on the hardest setting, not to mention played at increased tempo and without missing every one of the thousands of cues. The streamer claimed requiring months of practice of practice.

“The game is a fun, imaginary experience. Just as with Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you should use actual weapons and go to war,” says musician Herman Li.

The band had already completed a successful tour before Through the Fire and Flames appeared in the third game, yet he explains it turned them into a household name. “I recall the record label informing us that we were selling albums rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we were playing right ahead of top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility via the game proved so vast that it threatened to overshadow everything else the band has done. Recently, the track featured in a trailer for a major film. “In the past I felt differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “Should you just hear one DragonForce song, that's fine – each person has their own musical journey and I’m glad we played a role of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Impact from the Iconic Controller

Top-tier marketing, be it for cars, apparel or games, extends beyond mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. From day one, the creators felt that there’s an instinctive urge to make music, and their goal was to leverage innovation to allow people to participate”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games came out in just a five-year period between 2005 and 2010, featuring derivative titles like the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, corporate focus in plastic instruments died down, aside from a brief comeback several years later.

Games such as the fan project and newer releases have maintained the community alive, and there’s expectations of a new product from the original publisher on the way. A new studio has entered work on its debut rhythm-based title. The initial creators are participating in advisory roles. Is the world ready to embrace a new entry in the spirit of Guitar Hero?

“Our team believed those games could be like Madden allowing annual releases,” he remarks. “With abundant new music that it could be evergreen, so I’ve always been optimistic. It's entirely possible for it to continue with new generations.”
