Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
